NHS Conflict Resolution

Conflict Resolution is now mandatory training within the NHS.  MAX Conflict Management can work at all levels of a PCT or Medical University Taining College to resolve and manage disagreements and minimising the risks associated with working in such a high pressure clinical environment.

We are familiar with and train according to the NHS national syllabus for conflict resolution training.  For either clinical or support staff, this covers as a minimum the following defined areas:

Describe a common causes of conflict
Describing different forms of communication
Show examples of how communication can break down
Provide three examples of communication models that assist in conflict resolution
Advise different behavioural responses NHS staff may encounter during a variety of realistic interactions
Provide examples of the different warning and danger signs
Explain impact factors to NHS customers
Train in the use of distance when handling conflict
Explain what is reasonable force as it applies to conflict resolution
Provide different practical methods for dealing with potential conflict situations

We ensure that NHS institutions cover their minimum duty of care responsibilities and pride ourselves on the very practical nature of the advice we provide to NHS organisations.

A report from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) shows that a third of nurses working alone in the community have been assaulted or harassed in the last two years.  It surveyed 1,000 nurses who sometimes work alone and found 52% also felt the risk of abuse had risen in this time.

The RCN is calling on the government to give more protection to these nurses. Click for details from the BBC Panorama documentary 2007 on violence against staff in the NHS.

This programme exposed the fact that there are 75,000 reported atatcks on staff every year.  The NHS Security Management Service says NHS trusts must protect their own workers and receive guidance to do so which matches the RCN recommendations.
